General Training Reading Sample 1

General Training Reading Sample: 1

Read the information below and answer Questions 9-14.

CLASSIC TOURS -- COACH BREAK INFORMATION

Luggage
We ask you to keep luggage down to one medium-sized suitcase per person, but a small holdall can also be taken on board the coach.

Seat Allocation
Requests for particular seats can be made on most coach breaks when booking, but since allocations are made on a first come first served basis, early booking is advisable. When bookings are made with us you will be offered the best seats that are available on the coach at that time.

Travel Documents
When you have paid your deposit we will send to you all the necessary documents and labels, so that you receive them in good time before the coach break departure date. Certain documents, for example air or boat tickets, may have to be retained and your driver or courier will then issue them to you at the relevant point.

Special Diets
If you require a special diet you must inform us at the time of booking with a copy of the diet. This will be notified to the hotel or hotels on your coach break, but on certain coach breaks the hotels used are tourist class and whilst offering value for money within the price range, they may not have the full facilities to cope with special diets. Any extra costs incurred must be paid to the hotel by yourself before departure from the hotel.

Accommodation
Many of our coach-breaks now include, within the price, accommodation with private facilities, and this will be indicated on the coach break page. Other coach breaks have a limited number of rooms with private facilities which, subject to availability, can be reserved and guaranteed at the time of booking -- the supplementary charge shown in the price panel will be added to your account. On any coach break, there are only a limited number of single rooms. When a single room is available it may be subject to a supplementary charge and this will be shown on the brochure page.

Entertainment
Some of our hotels arrange additional entertainment which could include music, dancing, film shows, etc. The nature and frequency of the entertainment presented is at the discretion of the hotel and therefore not guaranteed and could be withdrawn if there is a lack of demand or insufficient numbers in the hotel.

Questions 9-14:
Choose the appropriate letters A-D and write them in boxes 9-14 on your answer sheet.

10 Your air tickets

Hello All, I have 8+ years of experience working in Information Technology. Presently I am working for IBM India and during my whole career, I have worked with clients from America. Now I want to migrate to Austalia/NewZealand. So I have below queries.
1) Do I need to appear for IELTS exam?
2) Is it possible to get the work Visa without having a job in that country?
3) If answers to the question 2 is yes, then what is the process for it.

Admin, why we have questions starting from 9? Where can I find questions after 14 and before 9? Is there any possibility that I can download the questions and print? For that, it should be all on a single page. Please suggest.

I believe there are three reading passages in an original IELTS Reading test. The admin of this website has listed the original reading passage numbers from the source. However, the reading passages' serial numbers were not maintained and that is why the second reading passage starts here from the question 10. I guess you should complete three passages in an hour. Giving three passages here would make it harder for the visitors to read and match answers. I think this is why the moderator has picked a single reading passage at a time.

Question 13# what is the difference between 'B' and 'C'? I think both are correct. 'B' if there is the demand & 'C' upon request.
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
0 # Partha 2017-06-29 16:32
From my understanding

'Request comes from an individual, demand comes from a group (based on strength of people)
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
0 # Utsav Dogra 2017-06-21 21:13
In the case of 'C' - "Upon request" can also apply to if you (one person), personally requests for the entertainment. (I think)

VS the case B, states straightforward about the demand. I can see your point why you would think like that, but the option 'C' is based on an assumption that a lot of people are requesting for it, hence demanding for it.
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
+2 # Shersingh 2017-06-12 10:06
C - request would mean, you would just ask for it and if available they will provide it to you. However, the passage says, it depends on how many people request for the entertainment. So, B - demand is the correct answer.

Can anyone tell me what's the main difference between GT and academic IELTS in reading and writing part?
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
0 # IELTS Mentor 2017-06-10 11:40
Differences between Academic and GT IETLS- Reading and Writing:

1. Reading passages in Academic IELTS are larger and more difficult. The passages are mainly related to the study materials found on different academic books in the university or college level. On the contrary, GT reading passages are easier than that of Academic reading passages and section 2 has one or two texts relates to work or training topics. Section three has one long passage, much like the academic module.

2. In Academic Writing Task 1, a test taker needs to write a report/summary of a graph/ chart/ pictorial or flow chart. In GT Writing Task 1, the candidate is required to write a letter.

3. Writing Task 2 (Essay writing) is almost same both in Academic and GT modules.

If you are taking IELTS for immigration process, then you need to take GT exam and if you want to go abroad for higher studies then the Academic IELTS exam is required.

Please check the official website of Immigration and Citizenship in Canada (www.cic.gc.ca/english/) and go through the different categories. Then decide which category matches you the best. Usually, people, these days, go for the express entry. Best of luck.

It depends, for what purpose you are appearing. If it's for higher education then take academic IELTS. If it is for immigration purposes, then general training IELTS is suitable for you. However, confirm with the relevant authorities first and they will provide you with the correct answer.

If you still spend the entire 40 minutes to finish a practice reading test at home, you are likely to not get a good result in the real test. In my own experience, I had trained and tried to read one practice in 25 minutes while ensuring no more than 5 incorrect answers (It's General btw), and eventually reached 8.0 in reading.

For 13 - the answer is 'B' because, in the last paragraph, they have stated that, "could be withdrawn if there is a lack of demand or insufficient numbers in the hotel". That means, if there is a demand for it, they would maintain entertainment. For 14 - the answer is 'B', because in the first paragraph it stated, "small holdall can also be taken on board the coach. " means, a hand luggage is permitted to be carried.

Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

Well, I believe that private facilities do not refer to bathroom facilities, particularly when one can't read the mind! There was no discussion about the bathroom, even a single time in the whole paragraph and I don't think facilities can be taken as the bathroom as it may be a prayer room, washroom or can be used as synonyms.
