IELTS Speaking Sample 30

IELTS Speaking Mock Test # 30

Part One - Introduction

The examiner asks the candidates about him/her home, work and studies and other familiar topics.

Q.  Where do you live now?
A. Thank you for the question. I live in Manaus which is a city in the North Region of Brazil.

Q.  Who do you live with?
A. I live with my family including my parents and siblings.

Q.  What kind of place do you live in (a house or an apartment)?
A. I live in a house that is owned by my dad. It is a moderately large house that has a lawn, playground and a large cottage.

Q.  Do you think it’s better to live in a house or an apartment? Why?
A. I think living in a house is better than living in an apartment. There are many advantages of living in a house than living in an apartment. Usually, a house is comprised of larger spaces while the apartments have some limited space to live in. Besides, someone can practice their hobbies like gardening if they own a house and this is almost impossible while living in an apartment. Houses give complete freedom to decorate and manage but apartment owners often do not have these advantages.

Q.  Describe your neighbourhood.
A. My house is located near the Mindu Park and thus the entire area is greener than the other parts of the city. Moreover, all the other houses are spacious and most of them have gardens in front of their houses. We have a community centre, a library and a large school in our neighbourhood. People are cordial and friendly and they have a great social relationship. I love my area and this is one of the best places to live in, in my opinion.

Q.  Do you like it? Why or why not?
A. Of course, I love the place. This is a nice and peaceful place to live in. The neighbours are peace-loving and we all have a better community here. I have always lived in this place and this is the place I always want to be.

Q.  How do people choose their place to live?
A. Ummm…. Actually, it depends on the personal preference and economic status of the people. In most of the cases, if people have enough money, they seek the spacious places to live in. And the relatively low-income group people actually do not have any preference in most cases, they need a space to live and they do not care for the features. Affluent people usually choose posh areas of the city while middle-class and poor people live in areas where rent and prices are fair.  Finally, some people live in the house they inherited and do not have the choice to move to a different location.

Part 3 - Two-way Discussion:

Q.  Do you enjoy giving and receiving gifts? Why or why not?
Answer: Yes, I do enjoy giving and receiving gifts. I think the gifts represent the love and affection for each other. I often give gifts to my close friends and relatives on different occasions including their birthday, marriage anniversary, new year eve, graduation day and so on. In the same way, when someone gives me a gift, I feel special and thankful.

Q.  Who usually gives you gifts?
Answer: Usually. I receive gifts from my parents, relatives and obviously my boyfriend, Bruno. Apart from that, many of my relatives and classmates also give me different gifts on my birthday.

Q.  Who do you give gifts to?
Answer: I give gifts to my parents, my boyfriend, and the other people whom I care for. I often give gifts to my friends or newly become parents who live in our neighbourhood.

Q.  In your country when do people usually give gifts?
Answer: People in Brazil usually share gifts marking different occasions like birthday, Christmas Day etc. They often exchange gifts on New Year Eve as well.

Q.  What kinds of gifts do they give?
Answer: Ummm…. Actually, it mostly depends on the occasions. People select gifts marking the occasions and festivals. For instance, when it is about celebrating someone’s birthday, certainly the gifts are different than those which are given on other occasions. Apart from that the recipients age greatly matter as well. For instance, people in Brazil give chocolate or toys to children, dresses and electronic equipment to newly married couples and flowers to family members. Freinds often exchange books as gifts. My personal favourite is the book as a gift.

Q.  Do you think gift-giving customs are different now than they were in the past? How?
Answer: These days, people exchange more gifts than the past and the number of occasions has increased as well. And I think this is happening for the celebration of different events and Days round the year. However, I believe that the very norm for presenting gifts to someone has remained the same despite the type of gifts people exchange has changed to a great extent. For instance, book as a gift was very common in the past but this has been replaced by electronic gadgets these days.

Q.  Do you think they will change in the future? How?
Answer: Yes, the custom of gift giving will change. People will exchange gifts on many more occasions but fewer would do so in person.  With the rise of online gift-shops, people will buy a gift online or give someone a coupon to purchase gifts from that online shop. Apart from that the type of gifts people exchange these days would be replaced by other gift items - more luxurious and digital products would occupy the list.
