Letter Writing # 149 - Write a letter to your friend who has forgotten to return a book

IELTS Letter Writing / GT Writing Task 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

A year ago, you lent your favourite book to a friend who you thought would enjoy it. Unfortunately, your friend has forgotten to return it. The book has sentimental value to you as it had been presented by your grandmother.

Write a letter to your friend. In the letter:

  • ask how he or she is doing
  • remind him/her about the book
  • explain why you need it back

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .................,

Sample Answer 1:

Dear Mim,

It's been a while since I have received your letter. Hopefully, you are doing great. How are Eric, Sumi and Amelia doing? I wish I could visit you and spend some quality time with you all.

I have recently joined a large telecommunication company in Brisbane as a project manager and I am enjoying the job. Are you still taking the yoga classes? Do you still read books the way you did in the past? I wish I have been a passionate reader like you. Have you finished reading 'Lady Susan' by Jane Austen that you borrowed from me about a year ago? I quite enjoyed reading it and this book is special to me as my grandmother gave it to me on my 14th birthday. This book is a reminder of her who had been a loving personality and an idol in my teenage. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did and you would not mind returning it. I consider it one of my greatest possessions.

I would really appreciate it if you can return the book via the postal service at your convenience. If you are yet to finish it, send me after you read it.

Why don't you visit us sometime during the summer vacation? We would be glad to have you at our home.

With lots of love,

Ella

Model Answer 2:

Dear John,

How are you? I hope you are healthy and happy. It's been a while since we have met. I would love to know how you all are doing. Do you still work for Smith & Sons Incorporation? Please write me back when you can spare some time.

Yesterday I took Martha and Mary to a movie theatre and decided to watch a classic movie. We finally watched 'To Kill A Mockingbird', and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was my second time though! That reminded me of a time when we talked about Harper Lee's deep South parable concerns lawyer Atticus Finch, from the book 'To Kill A Mockingbird', who was at the centre of our conversations for a whole evening. I really enjoyed the book and lent it to you almost two years ago. I hope you have enjoyed the book as much as I did.

This book is precious to me as my late grandmother once owned it and gave it to me on my graduation day. This copy is from one of the first editions and I would hate to lose it. Besides, it reminds me of my grandmother whom I deeply loved. I hope it would not trouble you to courier this book to my home address at your convenience.

I wish you all the best and hope to meet you soon.

Warm wishes,

Patrick
