General Training Writing Task 1 Sample 50 - On a recent holiday, you lost a valuable item

IELTS Letter Writing / GT Writing Task 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

On a recent holiday, you lost a valuable item. Fortunately, you have travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost.

Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter

  • describe the item you lost.
  • explain how you lost it.
  • tell the insurance company what you would like them to do.

You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own address.




Sample Answer 1:
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to you inform you about a mobile phone that I lost during my holiday trip when I was in Pondicherry. The mobile phone is an Apple iPhone, its price is approximately 70,000 rupees and is of black colour. I had an insurance coverage for my mobile phone from your insurance company.

The incident occurred when I was on a holiday trip in Pondicherry between 28 January 2017 to 31 January 2017. I was on Paradise beach on 30 January 2017 when I lost my mobile phone in the sand. I had made efforts in searching the mobile phone but was not successful in finding it. Since I lost the mobile phone I lodged FIR in the nearest police station.

Since I hold an insurance cover for the mobile phone I would like to claim the insurance amount for the lost phone. As per the policies of the insurance, I am liable to claim an amount of 62000 as an insurance cover for the mobile lost. Also please find the invoice and the FIR copy for the lost mobile phone along with this letter.

Dear Mr. Smith,

Recently I had availed your insurance service and had a wonderful time in the Perth trip. I am writing this letter to inform you that I have lost my professional cannon camera during the trip.

We stayed in Perth for three days and I had clicked so many amazing pictures. Luckily, before leaving for the airport I transferred all the pictures to my laptop. I clearly remember that we clicked our last picture at the entrance of the hostel and left for the airport. I wanted to capture last moments of our journey so I was looking for my camera and unfortunately, I could not find it. I called to the hotel staff to look for it where we took our last photo but he confirmed that he could not find it.

As per the travel insurance, I am entitled to receive the coverage of the lost item. It was cannon UX-324 model camera which is hard to get due to its high demand. I would like to claim for the camera's original price as it was a fairly new camera. I would appreciate if you could transfer the money into my account.
