IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

[The topic for your talk will be written on a card which the examiner will hand over to you. Read it carefully and then make some brief notes.]

Describe an object (e.g. a painting, sculpture, piece of jewellery/furniture, etc.) you find particularly beautiful.

You should say:

• what it is
• where it is
• what it shows/looks like

and explain why you find it particularly beautiful.

Model Answer 1: [A piece of furniture]

My house is full of different kinds of furniture that have been lying there for ages, and that are also serving many purposes for us. But today, I would like to talk about a piece of furniture which is relatively new, and which I particularly find beautiful.

The furniture I am talking about is a large computer desk which my family bought rather recently from a famous chain furniture store in my town. Even though it was primarily bought to use as a family computer desk, now we use it for practically all purposes, from ironing our clothes to eating our afternoon snacks. Not to mention, of course, the L-shape desk is large enough, not only to accommodate our big, old desktop but also to keep some of the best-looking flower vases that our house has.

Anyway, to describe the computer desk, in a bit more detail, it is a brownish, wooden (from an oak tree) desk that has perfectly well-rounded corners. Its edges on all sides are curved very smoothly to render the desk a rather modern look overall. It's also wide and deep, which gives us plenty of room, not only to place a computer but also to do other things which I have just mentioned. By the way, even though the desk, which can be broken into pieces and assembled easily, had a rather expensive price tag, my family actually got to buy it at a discounted price. In fact, the desk cost us only a little over 200 US dollars, which also additionally included some beautifully designed metal legs if we wanted to ever use them later on.

Anyway, I find this particular piece of furniture beautiful, mainly because it looks shiny as if it is just newly bought. Besides, the particular piece of furniture blends in perfectly and naturally with the other household items inside the room in order to give it a rather elegant look.

Model Answer 2: [A flower vase]

I think that I have come across many objects which could easily be described as “beautiful”. But, for some mysterious reason, whenever I am asked to think of something beautiful, the picture of an elegant-looking flower vase comes to my mind. So, I will just go ahead and talk about one beautiful flower vase which is still sitting nicely in the living room of my friend’s house.

I saw this lavishly elegant-looking flower base about a couple of years ago when I visited my friend’s house for the first time. Since then, whenever I have visited his house, I have felt like this vase has received a “makeover” - meaning it looks so shiny and entrancing that one would easily be deceived into believing that the beautiful object has just been bought, and that too without any flower placed within it! Now, imagine how beautiful the flower vase would look if you placed a bouquet of fresh and blooming roses in it! 

Anyway, the flower vase I am talking about is made of top-class and durable ceramic, and it has an “egg shape”.  The vase has a proportionate flat base so that it can stand on its own firmly. The body or the exterior painting of this vase very much resembles of that a “zebra” except the stripes on it are distinguished pastel and shiny navy blue colour. The vase is placed on a “V” shaped table so nicely, close to the wall, that one would very easily mistake it as a “beautiful painting work”, curved on the wall, from a little distance!

In the end, all I want to say is that it is one of the most beautiful flower vases, if not the most beautiful one, I have ever seen. This is so not only because it looks ever-new with its shiny and elegant design, but also because it can fit in practically any kind of home interior. Finally, I find this object to be so beautiful also because even though it is rather small in size, it very easily becomes the centre of your attention, no matter what time of the day you see it!

Oh, thank you so much for the time that you have allowed me to talk about this topic. Here, I’d like to describe an object that I find particularly beautiful - the Statue of Liberty, one of the most iconic and impressive sculptures in the world.

The Statue of Liberty is a colossal sculpture located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, USA. It stands as a symbol of freedom, democracy, and the enduring spirit of the United States. The statue is internationally renowned and attracts millions of tourists every year from around the world. It was a gift from the French people to the United States in 1886, marking the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence.

The statue is situated on Liberty Island in New York, overlooking the harbor. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and holds a prominent place in American history and culture. Visitors from all over the world come to New York specifically to visit this remarkable piece of art and history, and it has become synonymous with the values of freedom and liberty.

The statue, known formally as "Liberty Enlightening the World," depicts a female figure symbolizing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She stands tall at 93 meters, including the pedestal, and is draped in a robe. The most striking features of the statue include the crown with seven spikes, which represent the seven seas and continents, and the torch held high in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment. In her left hand, she holds a tablet inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence - July 4, 1776. At her feet lies a broken chain, which symbolizes freedom from oppression. The combination of these elements makes the statue a powerful symbol of hope, liberty, and human rights.

I find the Statue of Liberty particularly beautiful not only because of its grandeur and size but also because of its profound symbolism. The statue represents the ideals of freedom and independence, which resonate deeply with me. The design itself is breathtaking, and the way it stands proudly against the backdrop of New York Harbor is both awe-inspiring and humbling. The fact that it was created as a gift from the people of France to the United States only adds to its beauty, as it symbolizes international friendship and shared values of liberty. I also appreciate the historical significance of the statue - it has welcomed countless immigrants arriving by sea to America, and its presence continues to inspire people seeking freedom and opportunity. The statue’s aesthetic beauty, combined with its powerful message, makes it a truly extraordinary work of art.

Model Answer 4: [A piece of jewellery]

Thank you very much for this interesting topic, which allows me to describe an object that holds a special place in my heart and which I find exceptionally beautiful. I'm talking about a handcrafted silver necklace that I inherited from my grandmother.

This isn't a famous piece of jewellery kept in a museum; it resides safely with me, usually in a velvet pouch within my jewellery box at home. I only take it out for special occasions or when I simply want to admire it.

The necklace itself is truly exquisite. It's made of pure silver, but it's not a modern, minimalist design. Instead, it features very intricate filigree work, which is a delicate kind of metalwork where fine threads of silver are twisted and curled into elaborate patterns. The central pendant is somewhat teardrop-shaped, filled with these tiny, swirling silver motifs that create a lace-like effect. Around the edges of the pendant, there are small, subtly embedded semiprecious stones – tiny garnets that add a touch of deep red colour without overpowering the silver. The chain is also finely crafted, not a simple link chain, but one that continues the delicate artistry of the pendant. 

I find this necklace particularly beautiful because of its sheer craftsmanship is astounding. Knowing that each tiny silver thread was meticulously twisted and arranged by hand, without the aid of modern machinery, speaks volumes about the skill and patience of the artisan who created it. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, its beauty is deeply intertwined with its sentimental value. This necklace belonged to my grandmother, who was an incredibly elegant and strong woman. Every time I look at it or wear it, I feel a connection to her, and it reminds me of her grace and resilience. It's a tangible link to my family's history and a piece of her legacy. It's not just a beautiful accessory; it's a carrier of stories, memories, and a reflection of a timeless artistry that I truly cherish.

In a local art gallery, I saw a bold and colourful abstract painting. It didn’t depict anything specific but used shapes and colours to express emotion. I found it beautiful because it stirred something inside me and left room for personal interpretation.

At a cathedral I visited during a trip, the stained glass windows depicted biblical scenes in vibrant colours. When sunlight passed through them, the entire room lit up in a magical way. I found the effect breathtakingly beautiful.

8. A traditional Persian carpet:
A friend of my father owns a Persian carpet with intricate patterns and rich colours. It’s displayed on a wall like a piece of art. I admire its symmetry and the amount of work that must have gone into weaving it. Its cultural depth and visual appeal make it beautiful.

My mother owns a delicate porcelain tea set decorated with golden trims and floral prints. Each piece is perfectly shaped and lightweight. I find it beautiful because of its elegance and the graceful experience of using it during family gatherings.

10. A miniature crystal Eiffel Tower:
This item sits on my cousin’s shelf and was brought from Paris. It’s made of clear crystal and reflects light in dazzling ways. I find it beautiful because of its sparkle and because it reminds me of dreams of travelling to Europe one day.

4) One of the most renowned sculptures in the world is "The Thinker," located in Paris which I find captivating. Many consider it a symbol of philosophy, representing the act of deep thought and introspection. What makes this sculpture so beautiful to me is its intricate details, the smoothness of the bronze, and the powerful stance of the figure. 5) "The Last Supper" is one of Leonardo da Vinci's most exquisite masterpieces, housed in the dining hall of a monastery in Milan, Italy which I find quite gorgeous. This iconic painting portrays Jesus Christ sharing his final meal with his disciples before his crucifixion. The vibrancy and lifelike quality of the painting make it particularly striking. The emotions conveyed through the figures’ expressions and gestures seem so real that it's almost as if the scene is unfolding right before your eyes. The composition and details of the painting, combined with its historical and religious significance, make it a truly beautiful work of art.
