The Academic Reading Test consists of 3 sections (i.e., 3 reading passages) with approximately 40 questions in total. The three reading passages are usually of general interest and are taken from books, newspapers, journals, publications, or magazines. The reading passages are sometimes illustrated with diagrams, tables, pictures, or graphs. Each passage has accompanying questions – roughly 12 to 14 questions, and the passages vary in length (on average, 650 to 1200 words each).
