IELTS Flow Chart

IELTS Academic writing task 1 – Flow Chart

A “Flow Chart” in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is a type of diagram that visually presents a process, sequence, or system using arrows, boxes, and symbols. It usually illustrates how something is made, developed, or transformed through a series of stages. The production of paper, the life cycle of a frog, or the process of generating electricity from water are some typical examples of IELTS flow charts. Unlike data-based charts such as line graphs or bar charts, a flow chart focuses on the logical order and connections between steps rather than on numerical information or comparisons.

When describing a flow chart, you are expected to summarise the process clearly and accurately, highlighting the main stages, the sequence of events, and how each step is linked. The key is to present the information in a well-organised way, typically moving from the first step to the final outcome. You should avoid listing every small detail or using personal opinions. Instead, use formal language, passive voice (e.g., “the mixture is heated,” “the water is collected”), and appropriate linking words such as ‘then’, ‘after that’, ‘subsequently’, and ‘finally’. A good answer demonstrates a clear understanding of the process, shows logical flow, and uses a wide range of vocabulary to describe changes and transitions.
