Part 1 – Introduction & Interview:
[This part of the test begins with the examiner introducing himself or herself and checking the candidate’s identification. It then continues as an interview. In the interview, the examiner asks the candidate about his/her home, work or studies and other familiar topics.]
Topic – “Personal qualities”
Q. What do you think your best personal qualities are? [Why?]
Answer: I think one of my best personal qualities is being responsible. I always try to complete my tasks on time and take my commitments seriously. This helps me stay organised and reliable in both my studies and personal life.
Alternative Answer: I would say my best quality is my ability to stay calm under pressure. Even in stressful situations, I try to think clearly and make rational decisions. This has helped me handle challenges more effectively.
Q. Do you have the same personal qualities as your parents? [Why/Why not?]
Answer: Yes, I think I share some qualities with my parents, especially honesty and discipline. They have always emphasised the importance of these values, and I’ve naturally adopted them over time. However, I also have some traits that are quite different from theirs.
Alternative Answer: Not entirely, although there are some similarities. For example, my parents are very patient, while I tend to be a bit more impatient at times. I think personal qualities are shaped not only by family but also by individual experiences.
Q. What personal qualities are important to you in a friend? [Why?]
Answer: I value honesty and loyalty the most in a friend. I believe trust is the foundation of any strong friendship. If someone is honest and supportive, it becomes much easier to maintain a long-lasting relationship.
Alternative Answer: For me, understanding and a good sense of humour are very important. A friend who can listen and also make you laugh can make life much more enjoyable. These qualities help create a positive and comfortable bond.
Q. Do you think you have the personal qualities to be a good/successful leader? [Why/Why not?]
Answer: I believe I have some of the qualities needed to be a good leader, such as responsibility and good communication skills. I can listen to others and try to make fair decisions. However, I think I still need to improve my confidence in leading large groups.
Alternative Answer: To some extent, yes. I can work well with others and remain calm in difficult situations, which are important leadership traits. However, I feel leadership also requires strong decision-making skills, and I am still developing that aspect.

Describe a time when you had a long discussion about a news story.

Discussion topic: “News”
Q. How do most people find out about the news in your country?
Answer: These days, most people find out about the news through online platforms, especially social media and news websites. This is mainly because it is quick, convenient, and easily accessible on smartphones. For example, many people scroll through news updates on apps during their commute or breaks. Traditional media like television and newspapers are still used, but their popularity is gradually declining, especially among younger generations.
Alternative Answer: I think there is a clear shift towards digital sources of news in my country. While older generations may still rely on television or printed newspapers, younger people prefer mobile apps and social media platforms. For instance, breaking news spreads much faster on platforms like Facebook or online portals than on traditional media. However, this convenience sometimes comes at the cost of reliability, as not all online sources are trustworthy.
Q. Are people more interested in local news than national news?
Answer: I think people tend to be more interested in local news because it directly affects their daily lives. For example, updates about local infrastructure, weather conditions, or community events are immediately relevant. However, national news is also important, especially when it involves major political or economic decisions. So, while local news may attract more regular attention, national news still plays a significant role.
Alternative Answer: It often depends on the individual’s interests and circumstances. People who are more concerned about their immediate surroundings usually follow local news more closely. On the other hand, those interested in politics or national development may prioritise national news. For instance, during elections or major national events, people tend to shift their focus towards national updates. So the level of interest can change depending on the situation.
Q. How important is it to know about international news?
Answer: I believe it is quite important to stay informed about international news, especially in today’s globalised world. Events in one country can have significant impacts on others, particularly in areas like economics, politics, and the environment. For example, global conflicts or economic changes can influence fuel prices or trade in many countries. Therefore, having awareness of international events helps people understand the bigger picture and make informed decisions.
Alternative Answer: In my opinion, the importance of international news depends on a person’s lifestyle and interests. For professionals involved in business, education, or international relations, it is extremely important. However, for others, local or national news might be more immediately relevant. That said, having at least a basic understanding of global events is beneficial because it broadens perspectives and promotes awareness of global issues.

Q. Why are discussion programmes involving members of the public popular on TV and radio?
Answer: Discussion programmes involving the public are popular because they provide diverse viewpoints and make the content more relatable. When ordinary people share their opinions, it feels more authentic compared to expert-only discussions. For example, a public discussion about education or healthcare allows viewers to hear real-life experiences. This makes the programme more engaging and helps audiences connect with the issues being discussed.
Alternative Answer: An important reason for their popularity is that they create a sense of participation and inclusiveness. People enjoy seeing individuals like themselves expressing opinions on important issues. For instance, when members of the public discuss social problems, it often reflects common concerns that many viewers can relate to. Q. What kinds of people want to take part in discussion programmes?
Answer: People who are confident, outspoken, and interested in social or political issues are more likely to take part in discussion programmes. These individuals see it as an opportunity to express their views and influence others.

However, if the discussion is biased or poorly managed, it can spread misinformation or create confusion. Therefore, the impact largely depends on the quality of the programme.
