Percentage of Australian men and women doing regular physical activity: 2010

IELTS Column Graph: percentage of Australian men and women who did regular physical activity

Model Answer:
The bar chart outlines the proportion of Australian men and women, divided into six age groups, who engaged in regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, a higher percentage of Australian females participated in regular physical activity than men in most age groups in 2010, except the youngest participants. Moreover, men’s activity levels declined in middle age before recovering somewhat in their later years, whereas women’s participation rose steadily until middle age and then declined slightly in older age.

In detail, in the 15 to 24 age bracket, about 53% men reported regular physical exercise, compared to about 48% of women. However, from the age of 25 onwards, women generally surpassed men in terms of their ratio of regular exercise. For instance, 49% of Australian women between 25 and 34 were active compared to approximately 42% of men of that age. The gap widens in the 35-44 age group, in which only about 39% of men but over 52% of women exercised regularly.

In the 45 to 54 age group, regular physical activity could be observed among roughly 53% women, while men lagged at about 43%. Moreover, 45% of 55 to 64-year-old males did regular exercise, and females in this age group were higher by 8%. Finally, in the 65-and-over group, the figures for men and women were nearly identical, with roughly 47% of them exercising daily.
