IELTS Academic writing task 1 – Map & Diagram

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, Maps and Diagrams are sometimes used to assess your ability to describe and compare visual information related to locations, changes, or processes. A map question typically shows one or more layouts of a place, such as a town, park, or building, at different points in time, while a diagram often illustrates the structure of an object or system. Your task is to identify the key features, highlight major changes or developments, and summarise them in a clear, cohesive report.

When writing about maps or diagrams, you should focus on identifying spatial relationships and transformations. For instance, you should describe how areas have been added, removed, or converted, using precise location language such as “to the north of”, “in the centre”, or “adjacent to”. It’s also essential to organise your response logically – starting with an overview that summarises the main trends or transformations, followed by detailed comparisons in separate paragraphs.
