GT Reading Test Answer Explanation:

Your Moulex Iron

Questions 1-4:

Match the pictures below to the appropriate section in the instructions.
Write the correct letter A-F in boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet.

Questions 1 to 4 provide four images. We will need to look at these images which are related to the Moulex iron, and then find suitable paragraphs which talk about them.

Your Moulex iron - Question 1

Question 1.
Answer: D.

Explanation: The first image displays a button of the iron being pressed and a heavy stream is produced as a result of this. The paragraph D: Pressing button (or instruction D) talks about the button that activates a super shot of steam which momentarily gives an additional 40g of steam when needed. So the first picture actually depicts the instructions mentioned in paragraph D. Therefore, the answer to question 1 is D (D. Pressing button).

Your Moulex iron - question 2

Question 2.
Answer: A.

Explanation: This picture outlines that the iron is placed atop a water sink and the extra water is being released from the iron reservoir. 'Paragraph A Filling the reservoir' (instruction A) talks about emptying the reservoir after use. However, 'paragraph F Auto-clean' (instruction F) creates confusion as it also talks about holding the iron over the sink and continuing the process until the reservoir is empty. But if you look closely, you will notice that the ‘instruction F’ is asking to turn the stream control to Auto-clean and mentions that any calcium deposits will be washed out by the steam. It is, in no way, suggesting that water from the reservoir would drop. Rather it is suggesting that auto-clean mode will clean the calcium deposits with the stream. So the obvious choice is Instruction A.

Your Moulex iron - question 3

Question 3.
Answer: C.

Explanation: This image clearly depicts that a button on the Moulex iron is being pressed and water from the reservoir is being sprayed forcefully. The only paragraph that talks about pressing a button to get the spray of rapid water is the 'paragraph C Spray button’. It says “This button activates a jet of cold water…”. So the answer to this question is C.

Your Moulex iron - question 4

Question 4.
Answer: E.

Explanation: We can notice that in picture 4, the Moulex iron is positioned vertically near a certain. The paragraph ‘E  Suits etc.’ talks exactly about it, i.e. using the iron in a vertical position to remove creases from curtains. So indisputably the answer is E.

Questions 5-8

Answer the following questions on the Moulex iron using NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS.
Write your answers in boxes 5-8 on your answer sheet.

Note: Your answers to each question from 5 to 8 must not exceed three words. For insurance, ‘type of fabric being ironed’ is thematically a correct answer for question 6; but it will receive no marks for using five words. To get this answer correct, therefore, you have to write either ‘type of fabric’ or ‘the fabric’. Writing only 'fabric’ is not grammatically correct so it would not be correct as well.

Question 5. What sort of water are you advised to use?
Answer: distilled/ distilled water.

Explanation: The answer to this question could be found in the very first paragraph of the text. Look at the lines “Your iron is designed to function using tap water. However, it will last longer if you use distilled water.” It means that your iron will work with the tap water, but it is recommended that you use distilled water to make sure that your iron lasts longer. The word 'recommended' in this line means 'advised'.

Question 6. What factor makes you decide on the quantity of steam to use?
Answer: type of fabric/ the fabric.

Explanation: This question is about the quantity of stream to use, and it is discussed in paragraph ‘B Temperature and stream control’. The second line of the paragraph says that ‘you can, therefore, adjust the temperature of the iron and the amount of steam being given off depending upon the type of fabric being ironed'. It should be clear by now that the quantity of stream production should depend on the fabric or type of fabric. Therefore, the answer is either 'type of fabric’ or 'the fabric’.

Question 7. What should you do if your iron starts to drip water?
Answer: turn up temperature/ increase temperature.

Explanation: The answer to this question could be found at the end of paragraph B Temperature and stream control. Look at the 'important-marked' instruction which states:

Important: If your iron produces droplets of water instead of giving off steam, your temperature control is set too low.

Now that the question asks what should I do if the iron starts to dip water, and we know from the above instruction that water could drop off it if the temperature is set to too low, we can deduce that we must increase the temperature to prevent it. So the answer is either 'increase temperature’ or 'turn up temperature’.

Question 8. What could damage your iron if you do not clean it?
Answer: furring up/ calcium deposits.

Explanation: The question implies that we should look into the paragraph where the instruction for cleaning the iron is mentioned. The only paragraph that discusses it is ‘F auto-clean’.

Now we need to find out what might damage the iron if it is not cleaned regularly. The first line in this paragraph specifies that the iron becomes furred up if the iron's auto-clean system is not used regularly. So we can surmise that the answer is "furring up" (not 'furred up' because it is a verb).

In your real IELTS test, you should not look for another correct answer to this question when you have already got one. However, just for the explanation's sake, we will look a few more lines of this paragraph. The last instruction for auto-clean procedure mentions that ‘...turn the steam control to auto-clean. Any calcium deposits will be washed out by the steam.' So we can surmise that the auto-clean process eliminates calcium deposits, which is harmful to the iron. That is why 'calcium deposits' is another correct answer to question 8.

CLASSIC TOURS -- COACH BREAK INFORMATION

Questions 9-14:

Choose the appropriate letters A-D and write them in boxes 9-14 on your answer sheet.

Question 9.  If you want to sit at the front of the coach -

    A.  ask when you get on the coach.
    B.  arrive early on the departure date.
    C.  book your seat well in advance.
    D.  avoid travelling at peak times.

Answer: C.

Explanation: The reading text ‘CLASSIC TOURS -- COACH BREAK INFORMATION’ has six (6) paragraphs, each of which gives information on luggage, seat allocation, travel documents, special diets, accommodation and entertainment. Since question 9 talks about instructions on sitting at the front of the coach, we will read the paragraph titled 'Seat allocation’ to get the answer to this question.

Now let's see if someone wants to sit at the front of the coach, what he/she should do. This paragraph tells that “Requests for particular seats can be made on most coach breaks when booking, but since allocations are made on a first come first served basis, early booking is advisable. When bookings are made with us you will be offered the best seats that are available on the coach at that time.”

It is quite perceptible from the text that in order to get a seat at the front of the coach, someone has to book early as seats are allocated 'first come, first served' basis. Thus the obvious choice for this question is option C (book your seat well in advance).

Question 10. Your air tickets -

    A.  will be sent to your departure point.
    B.  must be collected before leaving.
    C.  will be enclosed with other documents.
    D.  may be held by your coach driver.

Answer: D.

Explanation: Air ticket is a travel document, so we will look at the paragraph 'Travel documents’ for the answer to this question. The text of this paragraph is:

“When you have paid your deposit we will send to you all the necessary documents and labels so that you receive them in good time before the coach break departure date. Certain documents, for example, air or boat tickets, may have to be retained and your driver or courier will then issue them to you at the relevant point.”

This paragraph outlines that if someone pays the required deposit, all the necessary documents, except for the air and boat tickets, will be sent to the person well before the coach departs. At this point, we can eliminate options B and C as wrong answers. Now that we have options A and D left, look further to find the accurate answer. The text mentions that the air ticket may have to be retained and the driver or the courier will then issue it at the relevant point. So it is clear that the driver might retain the air ticket but it does not say that it will be sent to the person at the departure point (relevant point does not necessarily mean departure point). So the correct answer is D.

Question 11.  If you need a special diet you should -

    A. inform the hotel when you arrive.
    B. pay extra with the booking.
    C. tell the coach company.
    D. book tourist class.

Answer: C.

Explanation: It is obvious that the answer to this question could be found in the paragraph titled 'Special Diets'. The paragraph starts with the clue to this question - "If you require a special diet you must inform us at the time of booking with a copy of the diet. This will be notified to the hotel or hotels on your coach break..."

If you require/need a special diet you should inform us (i.e. inform the coach company) and they (the coach company) will notify the hotel/hotels about it. No doubt the answer is C.

Question 12.  It may be necessary to pay extra for -

    A. a bathroom.
    B. boat tickets.
    C. additional luggage.
    D. entertainment.

Answer: A.

Explanation: Let's explore the text to find out which service may require extra payment. First, look at the paragraph titled 'Accommodation' to be sure if a bathroom might incur an extra cost.

From the text, we can find that "many of our coach-breaks now include, within the price, accommodation with private facilities, and this will be indicated on the coach break page"; which means not all coach break package includes accommodation with private facilities (i.e. a bathroom) and if it does, they will mention it on their page. Please note that "private facilities" here means "a bathroom". The text goes on that says "other coach breaks have a limited number of rooms with private facilities which, subject to availability, can be reserved and guaranteed at the time of booking -- the supplementary charge shown in the price panel will be added to your account. On any coach break, there are only a limited number of single rooms. When a single room is available it may be subject to a supplementary charge and this will be shown on the brochure page.

It should be clear by now that you need to pay an extra/ supplementary charge for a bathroom/ private facilities.

In your real IELTS test, you should stop looking at any further text for this question and move on to the next question. However, for explanation's sake, let's look at the other three options (B. boat tickets, C. additional luggage, and D. entertainment) to find out if any of them may incite extra amount.

In paragraph 'Travel Documents', nothing about paying an extra amount for boat tickets has been mentioned. Paragraph 'Luggage' also states nothing about paying extra for additional luggage. Finally, paragraph 'Entertainment' does not mention anything about the payment.

Thus from the whole text, we can find that a bathroom (with accommodation) and a special diet may cost an extra amount. Since a special diet is not an answer choice for question 12, we are left with the correct answer which is a bathroom (option A).

Question 13.  Entertainment is available -

    A. at all hotels.
    B. if there is the demand.
    C. upon request.
    D. for an additional cost.

Answer: B.

Explanation: The paragraph titled 'Entertainment' reveals that - "Some of our hotels arrange additional entertainment....". So the first option (A. at all hotels) is a wrong answer.

The text also mentions that "...The nature and frequency of the entertainment presented is at the discretion of the hotel and therefore not guaranteed and could be withdrawn if there is a lack of demand or insufficient numbers in the hotel." It explains that option D (for an additional cost) is incorrect also.

So we are left with two options (B & C). If we correctly understand the context of the text, we will realise that the hotel authority will not offer entertainment facility upon request from a hotel guest but based on the demand and they decide if the demand is available based on the number of hotel guests. So our final answer choice to this question is B

Question 14.  With every booking, Classic Tours guarantee you will be able to -

    A. request high-quality meals.
    B. take hand luggage on the coach.
    C. use your own personal bathroom.
    D. see a film if you want to.

Answer: B.

Option A is not a correct answer as we know special diets might cost an extra amount and is not guaranteed. Option B (take hand luggage on the coach), however, is guaranteed as the paragraph 'Luggage' includes that "We ask you to keep luggage down to one medium-sized suitcase per person, but a small holdall can also be taken on board the coach." So you are assured to take one hand luggage on the coach when you take the journey.

During your IELTS test, you should stop right here and move on to the next reading passage. But to clarify the answer choice to this question, we will examine the remaining answer choices.

While finding the answer to question 12, we realised that a room with a personal bathroom or accommodation with private facilities is not offered by many of the coach-break but not on all coach break. So it is not a guaranteed facility.

Finally, option D is incorrect, as the film (as part of the entertainment offered by the hotel) is subject to demand and the entertainment is offered at the discretion of the hotel, so this is not guaranteed either.

In question 12, it is supposed that you can pay for a bathroom. As I'm a Mexican, we ALWAYS have a bathroom when we go ANYWHERE and have a room. On the other hand, we pay ALWAYS EXTRA for extra luggage. And neither luggage or a bathroom is written as possibilities. That is why I put the luggage instead of the bathroom. We never pay for a bathroom. Never!
