You recently took a part-time job working for a local company. After a few weeks, you realised there were some problems with the job.

Write a letter to the manager of the company. In your letter:

  - explain why you took the job

Dear Mr Chen,

I am Rona Lyn Olivar, one of the part-time receptionists at your Sea View Hotel. I have been working here since July and I have taken the job to gain some experience that I thought would be helpful for my future career. I am writing to draw your attention to a few issues I have encountered in the hotel. I am hoping that you would take steps to solve these.

I have noticed that some of the duty staffs at night shift sleep inside the hotel's quarter instead of being at the reception area. Literally, I and Lindsay- who is also a new employee, work and manage everything at night. They even do not bother to come to the reception area at busy hours when we have an influx of guests - usually on Friday nights. I believe this is against the rules.

Moreover, the breakfast is supposed to be ready before 7.00 am but it is not the case. Sometimes the guests have to wait till 8.00 am for the breakfast to arrive. Some of the guests have lodged complained regarding this.  

I thought you should be notified about these irregularities.  
Duty officers at night shift should be reprimanded and warned so that they execute their duties. Besides, look at the recent complaints regarding the delay in breakfast serving and talk to the head chef.

I decided to take the position of a telesales specialist because I want to develop a career in the digital sales industry. Besides, it offers a flexible time and does not contradict my class schedule. However, I realised there are some obstacles that need your intervention.

The problems started almost a fortnight ago when the system administrator updated my computer's operating system. A few days ago, while I was querying a customer for her personal data, my computer restarted and this person’s profile was lost. This occurred several times afterwards. I asked the system administrator to solve it, but he did nothing about it!

The software that manages our calls often deliver far more calls per hour than we can handle. The person in charge did not listen to our request and asked us to contact you.

I believe that the system administrator should be show caused due to his negligence and the call-flow should be rational. More calls demotivate us do not mean more sales.

I was told at the time of joining that the working hours would be from 2.00 to 6.00 pm. However, I have been working from 2.00 to 10.00 pm for the last couple of days. Unfortunately, the person who is supposed to come at 7.30 pm sharp, does not show up until 10.00 pm.   

Moreover, my supervisor forces me to work on Fridays, which according to my job contract is not mandatory. Although I had managed to work on Friday until the last week by missing a few lectures at college, it seems unmanageable in the future as this will affect my studies.

I would really appreciate if you could talk to our supervisor about these problems and offer me a solution as early as possible. Otherwise, I would have to quit the job, even though I enjoy my work and love working for your company.

The main reason behind this redundant work is the lack of an MIS reporting software and a solid database system. We can avail many benefits by using that type of software. It would both ensure better performance of employees and data security.

Moreover, we have to take our lunch outside and this kills our valuable time. Lunch arrange by the office would ensure hygenic meals, and save our time which we could better utilise in the office.

Therefore, I request you to implement an MIS software for our office, which would be a really prudent investment in the long run. Besides, please arrange lunch for the employees as soon as possible.

I have been working with your company for almost five weeks as a part-time call centre agent. I am writing this letter to raise my concerns regarding some of the problems that I encountered during my work at your company. I am expecting that you would take measures to resolve them.

I took the job as I believed it would enhance my communication and public speaking skills and increase my confidence in socialising with other people in an addendum to supporting my studies.

During the first week, everything went fine. But from my second week, I started facing some unavoidable issues. My computer automatically shuts down and it interrupts my communication with customers. It happened almost every day. After I raised the problem to the technician in charge, he tried to fix it but without success. What I hate most is that the guy is blaming me for not using the computer properly! In addition, I was supposed to be picked up and dropped off every office day, but this is not happening.  

I am confident enough that the computer problem is not at all my fault, and happens due to the use of pirated software. I am concerned because my overall performance has already been affected by it. It would be easier if a new computer is provided to me or made sure the fix is done properly. Also please try to arrange my transportation, at least to drop me off at the end of the office.

I delightfully took the job to work for an excellent company and I was offered an attractive remuneration. The prospect for improvement and promotion was another reason I joined here.

I sighed the contract paper as a part-time employee and my office hours are from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. But the head of my department always forces me to come before 10.00 o'clock in the morning and this has become quite impossible for me. I have to drop off my son at his school at 8.30 am. I am not sure why the head of the department is ordering me to start office before 10.00 am while he never shows up before 11.00 am?

I am also shocked to face the unforeseeable trouble of working till 9.00 pm to finish my scheduled task. Sometimes I have to stay office till late hours while the whole office is deserted.

I feel nervous to tell the department head not to force me to come office before 10.00 am. That is why I am notifying you about this problem. I guess I should be given as much opportunity as it is offered to other employees. I can fully devote myself to work harder but something unusual and unreasonable should not be imposed on me. I want your intervene to have this problem resolved.

People often need help from instructors in using the gym equipment. However, it seems that other trainers are reluctant in offering assistance to club members. I offer as much as I can, but this means I am constantly in demand and therefore, working harder than anyone else in the gym. This situation seems rather unfair.

While I realise that members receive initial gym instruction, I feel that they also need ongoing help with the equipment. Could I suggest that a letter is sent to trainers promoting this? After all, personal attention of this kind makes people feel valued and may result in increased membership.

Therefore, I sincerely ask you to allow us to access the Internet.

Moreover, I was informed to help the User Interface (UI) team to swiftly accomplish their job a few weeks ago. But my current seat arrangement is quite inconvenient to interact with the UI team members as they are on a different floor. Hence, I would appreciate if you put my seat near the UI development team immediately.

I beg your pardon for pointing out issues which sound more like complaints. My sincere apology for that and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I am writing to express my concerns about my job at your company. As you know, I am working here as a part-timer and my main duty is to maintain the organisation's computer system. I still remember how excited I was when I was offered this job opportunity last month because I was very eager to apply my college knowledge in a practical field.

I started working from the beginning of this month and three weeks has already passed. Two issues I faced so far and those are troubling me. I would like to bring these issues to your attention. First, I found it was not convenient for me to report to the company office by 12: 30 pm every Tuesday. I have to attend a lecture on every Tuesday morning from 10.00 am to 12.00 am. Afterwards, I have only half an hour to rush into the office from the university, which makes me very stressful. Thus, I wonder if it is possible for me to go to work half an hour later on Tuesday. Second, I was asked to do programming with the language C++ at the company. However, I am not familiar with C++, and that is why my job progress is very slow. Instead, I am very good at the Java programming language and believe that the underlying task can be done equally well with Java. Therefore, I would like to request the change of programming language from C++ to Java.

I am Biwas Bhattarai and have been working in your company as a part-time Trainee Hygiene Supervisor from the last September. I would like to thank the entire team who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to work here, learn and contribute. However, there are some issues which I think I should bring to your attention.

I chose the job of the Hygiene Supervisor as my academic study and interest exactly matched the requirements of the job. Also, I am more than happy to work on a job that concerns about public health safety. I am fond of working in a team as well. These all parameters brought me to this job.

While working, I discovered that there are some weaknesses and issues in the company and improving those can make a better productivity of the company. As a newly appointed staff, I experienced that some old employees have an invisible prejudice on following instructions given by supervisors and this is hampering the overall performance of the team. More importantly, few staffs do not have enough awareness of basic hygiene practices while preparing food. Although, our company has provided proper SOPs but, that are not being followed properly in all the cases.

I would like to draw your attention to these issues and would suggest to organize hygiene awareness training for the newly appointed employees. Strictly follow-up on company policy and timely reminders through on-the-job training can be a great initiative to address this issue. Supervisors can be instructed to monitor daily hygiene practices and to report if any violation is noticed. There should be rewards and consequences on this matter.
I would appreciate your effort on these issues.

I am writing this letter to address some problems that have surrounded me in the office.

I've accepted your part time internship vacancy, which completely matched my field of study in the university. I was so delighted to have been offered this position and started working hard in response. As I mentioned in my resume, I am a student and it obviously makes me be punctual in order to reach my goal both in the university and the job environment.

The first two weeks of my job in your company was quite fabulous until some unavoidable situation arrived! The team I have been working have decided to take the day off on Monday and work on Sunday. This contradicts my schedule. I have notified the team lead and have not heard anything from him. Apart from that, I am being assigned some workloads that are completely irrelevant to my job position like bulk printing or meeting a client outside. Even though I cordially infomed the teamlead, he is completely noncooperative. Finally, the office car has stopped picking me up from my home and taking a taxi everyday is not economical for me.

Dear Mr Ali,
I recently took a job in your company as an Assistant Finance Manager as your company. Since the job timing and requirements suited my daily schedule and interests, I thought working in your company would increase the value of my resume and my work experience for future employers. Unfortunately, I am facing quite a few difficulties at work that I would like to bring to your attention.

Firstly, the company took away the laptop that was given to me for office work and I have been told to bring my own workstation. This is not possible as I do not have any spare personal laptop and even if I did, it would be against the company's rule to work with sensitive data on an employee's personal computer.
Secondly, the late shift staff that I work with is not provided with food and coffee. It will save a lot of time for finance team if they could get food within the office. This could also improve work continuity as the staff won't have to leave the cubicle for one to two hours.

I am sure that these changes will not only benefit me and my team but also help the organisation in a long run.

My name is Subrahmanyam and I am a native of Phoenix, Arizona. I recently joined as a part-time Software Developer in May Saverde located in central Phoenix. I am a college student studying computer science at Arizona State University and will be graduating next year. To fund my college fee and cover living expenses, I joined in this job 5 weeks back.

I am getting paid well in this job but I am facing a lot of work pressure from my colleagues. As they know I am a part timer, they are forcing me to do all of their works. They are doing micro management and telling me that they can fire me if they want.

Our manager is very kind to me but her office is located in another location and that’s why she has not noticed those issues. It will be much appreciated if she can come to our work place more often so individual employees can share their work experience with her. If she can provide her mobile number to reach her that will be really helpful.

While joining for this job I was told and also agreement signed for the evening 5 to 8 shift but for last couple of days our shift supervisor is insisting me to work for another 2 hours which is beyond my contract and also I am not in a position to meet the timing as regularly I have to leave for my office by 6 in the morning. So, If I work late night then that may affect my morning schedule.

I would like to thank you for giving me an opportunity to do a part-time job in your workshop. The money I earned from this work helps me to pursue my university course.

I am writing you because I want to inform you about some problems I had observed into your motor shop. In my 3 weeks stay here I have observed that most of your mechanics arrived late at work and they leave the shop very early in the afternoon. That is the main reason why we cannot keep our commitments to our costumers to deliver their unit on time. They are already complaining, because they cannot get their car on the day we have promised to them.

I think you should meet them and remind them of their duty and responsibilities to come to work on time and to finish the job on time. Otherwise, we will lose the trust of our clients and they might look for another service provider.
