IELTS Letter Writing / GT Writing Task 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are going on a short training course at a college in Greenmount, Northern Ireland. You need somewhere to live while you are there.

Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In your letter:

  • explain your situation
  • describe the accommodation you require
  • say when you will need it

You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam, 


Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inquire about the accommodation facilities available for the course seekers at your college. I am Alex Jones, an applicant for the forthcoming training course on "Time Management in Professional Environment to Boost Performance", at your college. I am hoping that you would kindly arrange suitable accommodation for me.

I am currently employed in Southern Ireland, as a Chartered Accountant in a multinational accounting firm. As you already know, the course I am interested in would commence at the beginning of July at Greenmount, Northern Ireland, a location far away from the city where I live.

I would like to take the privilege of describing my accommodation needs. First of all, I am expecting a small flat or at least a room for me. Secondly, I would like to dwell in a calm and quiet environment, as the tranquillity of the workplace is important to me. Lastly, I would be glad to stay close to the course venue, so as to save time.

I plan to arrive on 27th of this month and hence would request you to finalise my flat or room before I arrive. I will stay at this place as long as I have my training course, possibly till September.

I am writing this letter to request you for arranging suitable accommodation for me during my training course at the City College, Greenmount, Northern Ireland. I am looking for a place to live in and I hope you would help me with this.

I am searching for a shared room with a kitchen and attached bathroom. It would be great if someone is interested in sharing the room but she has to be a female who would take the same training course as mine. I would really appreciate a room with a hot water facility, and I am looking for a furnished room.

My course is going to commence on 10th September and I shall reach there a week earlier. Please arrange a living place for me in Greenmount as soon as possible so that I can successfully complete the course.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inquire about the accommodation you offer for the training participants at your college. I am looking for a single room and hoping that you can arrange one for me during my training.

I will take part in the training course titled 'Persuasive Communication for Technology Professionals' at your college from July 2020 to September 2021. To successfully complete the course, I would like to stay nearby. Hence, I would request you to arrange a living place for me.

I would like a single room that I would not need to share with a roommate. Besides, I prefer an attached bathroom and the facilities of hot water. Finally, the room should be large enough and fully furnished.

The course will start on 08 July 2020 and I would be thankful if you could find me a place to stay in during my three-month-long training course. I would be grateful for your help.
