People work because they need money to live. What are some other reasons that people work?
Discuss one or more of these reasons.
Use specific examples and details to support your answer.
Sample Answer 1: People in the beginning of the human history started working because they needed food, shelter and other very basic human needs to survive. The primary reason for working, even in this modern era, is to earn money to survive. However, with time the definition of survival has changed and many luxuries of life have become the necessity. Thus in my opinion people primarily works to earn money. However, self-contentment, helping others, saving for future generation and spending quality time are some other important reasons people work.
First of all, self-contentment and self-realization are two important factors people work even though they have sufficient money. These kinds of people work to invent something new and try to satisfy their unquenchable thrust for knowledge. Their curiosity, hard work and talent drive them to invent something new that helps millions of others throughout the ages. Scientists, artists, mathematicians, astronomers and explorers throughout the history have done so to make this world a better place. No doubt some of them had personal ambitions, but self-contentment and curiosity were the main driving forces for them to work hard.
Second, saving for the future, both for their old age and for the future generation, is another reason people work. Someone who has a lot of money cannot guarantee that it will remain the same for ages. Thus many people work to save for the rainy days and the make sure that their future generation will have better standards of life. Further working on something that we enjoy ensures far more quality time than being idle. Thus many of us work because we enjoy what we do. Money is not the primary motivation for working in this case.
Finally, doing something better or helping other is another important reason many of us work. If we look back in the history, we will find numerous famous people who left their conform zone and worked for the betterment of others. They were selfless people who could have easily accumulated wealth but instead they have vowed to help others.
In conclusion, self-contentment, curiosity and selflessness of many are the three important reasons we have a different world than we had in the primitive ages. Some people work to save for the future while others to help others and to fulfil self-realizations.
Model Answer 2:
I think there are two types of people who do a job. The first types of people work for money primarily, and another type of people work for self-realization, to use their skills. I state my position on the following points.
First of all, people who work for self-realization like their job. Money is not important for them, they need satisfaction. I believe that this kind of people makes our evolution and history. They aspire after new inventions and discoveries overcoming all obstacles in their ways. I think that these people are very interesting because they know a lot, read many books and have their own life experience. Of course, they need money for some essential needs such as food and cloth, but they do not need them for luxury houses or expensive furnishings. Many scientists are people who devote their lives to new knowledge and discoveries. There are pieces of evidence of lots of opulent inventors and scientist who loves their work more than anything else and have devoted their lives to the work they loved. Their primary reason for working was their passion for the work.
Second of all, I believe that people need self-realization. It gives them the opportunity to contribute in world's history and share their knowledge and experience with other people. I think it helps them to realise that they are needed by humankind and will not be forgotten. This is priceless.
To sum up, I think that people's aspiration after self-realization is the main reason why we have now good medicine, different means of communications, many devices to make our lives easier, etc.
