Model Answer 1: [Opinion: it is important to learn other subjects in addition to main subjects]

University education serves as a gateway to knowledge and career prospects. However, there is an ongoing debate about whether students should broaden their horizons by studying subjects beyond their main specialization or focus solely on obtaining a qualification in their chosen field. This essay will explore both perspectives and provide reasons why learning about different subjects other than the core subjects should be ideal.

On the one hand, proponents of specialization argue that dedicating all of one's time and attention to a chosen field can lead to greater expertise and career prospects. For instance, a student pursuing a degree in computer science may contend that exclusively focusing on coding, algorithms, and computer systems will make them more competitive in the job market. This specialization can also accelerate the learning curve, enabling students to master complex concepts in their chosen field.

On the other hand, there are compelling reasons to advocate for a broader educational experience. Learning subjects beyond the core specialization can foster interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving skills. For example, a computer science student who takes courses in psychology or ethics may develop a nuanced understanding of the ethical implications of technology. Such a well-rounded perspective can lead to more responsible and innovative solutions in their career.

In my opinion, exploring other subjects by university students is a far more beneficial approach. While a strong foundation in one's chosen field is vital, interdisciplinary knowledge equips students with a holistic view of the world, making them adaptable and creative in addressing complex challenges. It also helps them bring innovation that becomes useful for all.

In conclusion, while specialization has its advantages, universities should encourage students to explore a variety of subjects to enrich their educational experience and achieve a well-rounded education that encompasses diverse subjects. This approach offers a more comprehensive skill set and a broader perspective, which can be invaluable in a rapidly changing world.

Model Answer 2: [Opinion: it is more important to focus on core qualification]

In higher education, students often debate whether they should focus solely on their main subject or explore additional disciplines. Some argue that a broader knowledge base enhances intellectual growth, while others believe that full dedication to a specific qualification leads to better career prospects. This essay will discuss both perspectives before concluding that university students should prioritise their primary field of study.

On the one hand, some university students prefer to diversify their knowledge by studying subjects outside their primary discipline. They argue that this approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability - qualities that are highly valuable in today’s dynamic job market. For instance, a computer science student who also studies business management may develop the entrepreneurial skills necessary to launch a tech startup. Furthermore, interdisciplinary learning can lead to innovative solutions by integrating knowledge from various fields. A well-rounded education, therefore, may provide students with broader career options and personal enrichment.

On the other hand, dedicating full attention to one's main subject is essential for mastering complex concepts and excelling in a chosen career. Many professional fields, such as medicine, engineering, and law, require years of rigorous training, and any distractions could hinder academic success. For example, medical students must focus extensively on their coursework and practical training to develop the expertise necessary for patient care. Diverting time to unrelated subjects may dilute their focus, resulting in weaker foundational knowledge and lower professional competence.

In conclusion, while exploring additional subjects can be beneficial, university students should prioritise their main qualifications to build expertise and ensure career readiness. A focused approach enables them to acquire in-depth knowledge, excel in their field, and secure better opportunities in the future.

Essay Question:
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Essay Type:
Discussion Essay.

Main question:
Should university students focus solely on their main qualification, or should they study additional subjects as well?

Why university students should study additional subjects:

Interdisciplinary knowledge fosters creativity and innovation:
Learning different subjects enhances critical thinking and creativity, allowing students to apply diverse ideas in real-world situations. Exposure to multiple disciplines encourages problem-solving from various perspectives. For example, a computer science student studying psychology might develop better human-computer interaction software by understanding user behavior.

Enhances career flexibility and broader job prospects:
A wider knowledge base enables students to explore multiple career paths, increasing their employability in various industries. Many employers value candidates with diverse skills beyond their core expertise. For example, an engineering graduate with business knowledge can transition into management roles more easily.

Encourages personal growth and lifelong learning:
Exposure to different fields broadens students' perspectives and helps them develop a well-rounded personality. This approach promotes continuous learning, which is crucial in an evolving world. For example, studying philosophy alongside science helps students develop strong ethical reasoning skills.

Why university students should focus solely on their qualification:

Mastering a field requires complete dedication:
Specialized professions demand in-depth expertise, which requires focused study. Diverting time to other subjects may weaken a student’s grasp on their primary discipline. For example, medical students need to dedicate years to studying medicine to develop the expertise required for patient care.

Too many subjects can lead to distraction and reduced performance:
Trying to learn multiple subjects can divide attention and result in lower academic performance. Focusing on one subject ensures better understanding and mastery of the field. For example, an engineering student taking extra humanities courses may struggle to keep up with technical coursework.

Employers value specialized expertise over general knowledge:
In highly competitive industries, deep knowledge of a single subject is often more valuable than a broad but shallow understanding of multiple disciplines. For example, a company hiring a software developer prioritizes expertise in coding rather than knowledge of history or literature.

Dear Sattar,

If you notice this sample answer, you can see that the very last line of the Introduction paragraph gives an opinion. Look at the part that says "...and provide reasons why learning about different subjects other than the core subjects should be ideal."

This clearly gives an opinion.

Regarding other essay samples - we will review them and include an opinion in an opinion-type essay if it is missing.
