Model Answer:

In contemporary society, there exists a debate regarding whether individuals aged over 65 should be allowed to continue working or whether they should retire. This essay will explore both perspectives, arguing that the decision to work beyond the age of 65 should be a matter of personal choice.

On the one hand, there are proponents of mandatory retirement who argue that individuals over 65 should not continue working. They contend that this policy would open up employment opportunities for younger generations who are struggling to find stable jobs in an increasingly competitive job market. Moreover, it is argued that older employees may not be as productive or adaptable to new technologies, potentially hindering the efficiency of businesses and organizations. For instance, in physically demanding professions or industries reliant on cutting-edge technology, older workers may find it challenging to keep up with the physical demands or rapid changes.

Conversely, advocates for personal choice in retirement emphasize the importance of individual autonomy and economic necessity. For some, retirement at 65 may not be financially viable due to inadequate pension plans or unforeseen expenses. Allowing individuals to work if they choose to do so can help secure their financial stability and independence in their later years. Moreover, the wealth of knowledge and experience possessed by older workers can be an invaluable asset to businesses and industries. They can serve as mentors, sharing their insights and expertise with younger colleagues, ultimately contributing to the overall growth and success of organizations.

Personally, I support the view that individuals over 65 should have the freedom to decide whether to continue working or retire. Age should not be the sole criterion for employment, as competence and contribution should be the primary considerations. This approach respects individual choices and recognizes the diverse needs and circumstances of people as they age.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding the employment of individuals over 65 is complex. While there are valid arguments on both sides, I believe that allowing people to make this decision based on their abilities and circumstances is the fairest approach, promoting autonomy and economic security in their later years.
