The mass exodus from rural areas to cities poses multifaceted consequences. It leads to the depopulation of rural regions, thereby impacting agriculture, a crucial sector of the economy. This shift strains urban infrastructure, resulting in overcrowding, increased demand for housing, and a surge in unemployment due to the overwhelming influx of job-seekers. For example, as more people migrate to cities, rural communities experience labour shortages, affecting agricultural productivity and food security for the whole country. It also degrades the living conditions in cities, especially for poor people, and increases the housing crisis.
To mitigate the adverse effects of rural-to-urban migration, proactive measures need implementation. Encouraging the development of rural economies is pivotal. Investing in rural industries and promoting entrepreneurship can create job opportunities, thereby incentivizing individuals to stay in rural areas.
