Model Answer: [Opinion: Success is about hard work and determination]

Success is a concept that elicits varying perspectives among individuals. While some contend that success is the result of hard work and determination, others believe that it is intrinsically linked to monetary wealth and outward appearance. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives. However, personally, I am convinced that success stems from hard work and perseverance.

On the one hand, there exists a notion in society that success is synonymous with material wealth and physical appearance and they are the key ingredients for achieving success. This perspective posits that financial affluence and an appealing appearance are paramount in achieving success. Monetary wealth ensures better education and greater societal links which often help people reach the top of the success ladder. For instance, students from wealthy families are often ahead of their poor counterparts. This exemplifies how health and beauty can help people achieve success.

On the other hand, an opposing viewpoint asserts that genuine success is derived from dedication and perseverance. This school of thought believes that success is a culmination of relentless effort, determination, and resilience in the face of challenges. Individuals who exemplify this belief emphasize the importance of hard work, setting goals, and consistent effort in achieving success. They argue that those who work diligently towards their aspirations, despite obstacles, ultimately achieve success. For instance, according to many Ivy League universities, seven out of ten scholarships are achieved by students from less fortunate families. This exemplifies that poor students are often ahead in the competition to achieve success.

Personally, I subscribe to the belief that success is primarily about hard work and determination. True success is not merely achieved by material wealth or physical appearance but by the dedication, perseverance, and resilience exhibited in pursuit of one's goals. Hard work is the cornerstone of achievement, driving individuals towards their objectives and fostering a sense of fulfilment.

In conclusion, while societal notions of success may be multifaceted, I firmly advocate for the view that genuine success is fundamentally tied to hard work and determination rather than financial wealth or external appearances.

The main question of this essay:
A) Is success primarily a result of hard work and determination, or is it linked to money and appearance?

Reasons why success is primarily about hard work and determination:

1. Hard work leads to skill development and expertise:
People who dedicate time and effort to honing their skills often achieve greater success because they become highly competent in their fields. Consistent practice and perseverance contribute to long-term achievements. For instance, athletes who train daily, like marathon runners, often outperform those who rely solely on talent.

2. Determination helps overcome obstacles:
Successful individuals often encounter failures, but their persistence helps them push through difficulties. This mindset allows them to learn from setbacks and continue striving towards their goals. To cite an example, Thomas Edison failed numerous times before inventing the light bulb but remained determined to succeed.

3. Success stories often highlight dedication over wealth:
Many successful people started with limited financial resources and achieved their dreams through sheer hard work. Their stories inspire others to put in the effort rather than relying on material advantages. For example, Oprah Winfrey grew up in poverty but became a global icon through perseverance.

4. Hard work builds credibility and trust:
People who consistently demonstrate their commitment gain the trust of employers, partners, and clients, which is essential for long-term success. In contrast, those who solely depend on appearance may struggle to maintain credibility. For instance, hardworking employees are more likely to receive promotions than those who solely focus on projecting a good image.

5. Determination fosters continuous growth:
Those who are committed to improving themselves are more likely to succeed, as they constantly seek to learn and adapt. This growth mindset allows them to remain competitive in dynamic fields. For example, tech entrepreneurs who keep innovating stay ahead in the competitive market.

Reasons why success is linked to money and personal appearance:

1. Money provides opportunities and resources:
Wealthy individuals can afford high-quality education, training, and networking opportunities, giving them a head start in various fields. Access to resources often determines one's ability to succeed. For instance, entrepreneurs with initial capital are more likely to launch successful startups.

2. Appearance impacts social perception:
Attractive individuals often receive more attention, which can lead to better social and professional opportunities. In industries like entertainment and media, appearance can significantly influence success. For example, models and actors often rely on their looks to secure lucrative contracts.

3. Money can buy influence and social capital:
Wealth enables individuals to establish connections with influential people, leading to business deals and career advancement. Being part of elite networks enhances one’s professional visibility. As an example, affluent businesspeople often use their wealth to sponsor events and gain social influence.

4. Attractive individuals are often perceived as more competent:
Studies suggest that physically appealing people are viewed more positively, leading to biases in hiring and promotions. This can result in more career opportunities regardless of actual skill level. For example, in corporate environments, well-groomed employees might be favored for leadership roles.

5. Money allows for self-promotion and brand building:
Those with financial means can invest in personal branding, marketing, and public relations, giving the impression of success. This visibility can attract more professional opportunities. To give an example, influencers who spend on promoting their content tend to attract larger
